My work transforms the way a surface is experienced. My process combines subtractive and additive methods to fabrics, mesh, and mixed media in order to both transform the materials into something entirely different but at the same time embrace their inherent qualities. With a tack, I scratch into and pull at the threads of various fabrics to reveal what lies beneath; I stiffen cloth with paint to appear as folded sheets of metal; I cut and weave painted mesh into aged textile-like forms. The process begins with an obsessive curiosity about the material and the need to dig into it. How was it made? What is it? What is it not? A conversation of hard and soft, of construction and deconstruction, of exposure and concealment, the forms that emerge from the scratching, the digging, and the folding are more than their source material but also in harmony with it.
